“Ancestral Power” is a contemporary reimagining of the Strength tarot card, featuring Dion in the fighting stance at the Latchmere Leisure Centre. In her books, The Marks Left on Her and A Hakka Woman, Dion delves into the genuine narratives of her personal journey and that of her grandmothers. Together, Dion and her nan embody a representation of female generational strength, both internally and externally. The image of her nan in the background serves as a testament of Dion’s own inner fortitude. The chair symbolises stability, while the bags of rice represent cultural nourishment and love through the act of preparing food. One of the bags of rice bears a small red marking, which demotes Dion’s nan’s name written in Chinese symbols. A poignant reminder of how her nan’s cooking nurtured and cherished her children and grandchildren.
